Great Earthquakes In Diverse Places: Mexico, New Zealand, and Japan

When I was contracted as the Senior Database Developer, for Anti-Money Laundering, at the global wealth institution, UBS, I had the opportunity to work with a brilliant boss. When I met him he always carried a book with him he was reading at the time. He had over 30 years experience and I was blessed to learn so much from him. We would have many intellectually stimulating conversations over the years and we discussed the Bible on many occasions.  His approach was usually objective and this particular conversation was about the growing mega quakes on the Earth.

I shared with him the Biblical scripture where Jesus, said, in Luke 21:11, “There will be great earthquakes, famines and pestilences in various places, and fearful events and great signs from heaven.” His response to me was, “There have always been earthquakes.” He had a way of using his eye brows to finish a point. I responded to him that Jesus said these earthquakes will be great and Jesus made this point to differentiate between common earthquakes.

Magnitude Earthquake Effects Estimated Number
Each Year
2.5 or less Usually not felt, but can be recorded by seismograph. 900,000
2.5 to 5.4 Often felt, but only causes minor damage. 30,000
5.5 to 6.0 Slight damage to buildings and other structures. 500
6.1 to 6.9 May cause a lot of damage in very populated areas. 100
7.0 to 7.9 Major earthquake. Serious damage. 20
8.0 or greater Great earthquake. Can totally destroy communities near the epicenter. One every 5 to 10 years

Earthquake Magnitude Classes

Earthquakes are also classified in categories ranging from minor to great, depending on their magnitude.

Class Magnitude
Great 8 or more
Major 7 – 7.9
Strong 6 – 6.9
Moderate 5 – 5.9
Light 4 – 4.9
Minor 3 -3.9

Great quakes can be defined as 8 or higher on the Richter Scale because they cause devastation and the world witnessed this power in Japan and Chile. The 2011 earthquake off the Pacific coast of Tōhoku was a magnitude 9.0–9.1. This great earthquake is infamous for causing nuclear meltdowns at  the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant complex. The ecosystem is still dealing with the effects of this great quake. The 2010, Chile, earthquake occurred off the coast of central Chile, 27 February, having a magnitude of 8.8 on the moment magnitude scale, with intense shaking lasting for about three minutes.

The location of this great quake slightly changed the tilt of the Earth’s axis fulfilling prophecy foretold in Matthew 24:22, “If those days had not been cut short, no one would survive, but for the sake of the elect those days will be shortened.” Now we understand where Science and Christ meet in the definition of great earthquakes. Now we can review statistics pertaining to great earthquakes. This will give us an indication if prophecy is being fulfilled leading up to the greatest earthquake the world will ever experience according to Biblical prophecy.

35% of these earthquakes occurred in the new millennium. Which means great earthquakes are in fact on the rise. The recent earthquakes in New Mexico, New Zealand, Japan, and Chile for 2017 are in fact categorized as strong, but not great. Meaning there are more great earthquakes on the horizon. In the Book of Revelation 11:13, it says, “At that very hour there was a severe earthquake and a tenth of the city collapsed. Seven thousand people were killed in the earthquake, and the survivors were terrified and gave glory to the God of heaven.” This earthquake will be in a highly populated city and the death toll will be 7,000.

We should remember the number 7,000 because we will know this will be a prophecy fulfilled. Right now we are seeing a rise in strong quakes but more great ones are coming while we wait for the greatest one ever recorded. Stay woke.
