Old School Monster Movie Reloaded: Gamera

Old School Monster Movie Reloaded: Gamera

I grew up in a time long long ago when there were UHF television stations. It was a time when you had to stand up and walk over to the TV to change the channel or adjust the volume. If you grew up in my time Saturday mornings and afternoons were pure programming bliss and if you were into monster movies the Japanese productions never disappointed. These movies were served up on the “Creature Double Feature” where the Japanese movie characters had voices that did not match their faces; and there lips moved after the dialogue ended. Sometimes you could even see the wires on the monsters, but you did not care, you waited all week for this escape.

The first time I saw Gamera I had to be about 6 years old and it was awesome for a 6 year old. Gamera is the monster every boy hoped their pet turtle would grow into because he was bad ass like Godzilla. Gamera ate pools of petroleum jelly could breathe fire and could pull his legs in and fly. Special effects have come a long way since the 1970s and hopefully Gamera will deliver in 2015. I think this movie will appeal to hardcore monster movie fans and the international base Gamera captured in the 1970s. All we need now is a revamped “Space Giants” and “Johnny Sokko and his Flying Robot.” Hopefully, they will get Rodak’s hair right this time around.
